The Dido Fellowship

WE TAKE PLEASURE IN ANNOUNCING THE WINNER OF THE FOURTH DIDO FELLOWSHIP

UWA Fine Arts graduate DARRYN ANSTED (23) has been awarded this prestigious annual fellowship offered to graduating students in Fine Arts from Western Australian Universities.

The Dido Fellowship is a residential fellowship with studio space and access to facilities and expertise within the Pericles Fine Art Studios in Mt. Lawley. With the support of a grant of $10,000 from ArtsWA and Lotteries Commission this Fellowship enables the recipient to concentrate on his/her work for a year without the pressure of earning an income. Leon and Moira Pericles established the Dido Fellowship in 2000 to honour Leon¹s father Dido, whose support and commitment to framing Leon¹s work in his early years was invaluable.

Dido Fellowship Recipients

    Damian McCann - Curtin University
  • 2002

A happy and busy year during 2003 with the touring Print Retrospective being shown in Adelaide, Sydney and currently in the stunning exhibition space of the Mining Hall of Fame in Kalgoorlie where it will reside until the end of January 04.

A superb effort from the Greenhill Gallery in Adelaide with the opening of Leon's exhibition "Inside the Museum of Widjimorphup" in October. (some will recall this show at the Perth Greenhill Gallery in December last year). A somewhat bewildered Dr. Tim Flannery (current director of the South Australian Museum and acclaimed author) officiated in the alias of Prof Herbert Fossil, Director of the Museum of Widjimorphup to open the show.

Widji art critic Prof Hugh J'Eegeau with his hubristic diatribe competed for attention with Tiggy Puggenheim who performed an impressive aria, closely observed by the doting Lord Mayor, Mervyn Pigmorton.   Cameras were flashing and the media loved it!!  The audible reaction to the work on the walls  was testament to the art loving public's appreciation for the work in the exhibition.

This theme exhibition of displays and art work was produced by local residents of Widjimorphup for their museum to mark the occasion of their sesquicentenary. The body of work is a celebration (with just a touch of satire) of small rural communities rallying to support and promote their towns.

A new work exhibition is currently on show at the Beaver Gallery in Canberra.  Some stunning new paintings and prints can be seen there for the next few days.

The Dido Fellowship with Curtin graduate Yolanda Juen this year is coming to a close and it has been a harmonious and effective year with Yolanda making  the most of every opportunity.  We wish her well as she moves on to do her Masters at RMIT.  The new Dido Fellow for 2004 is Darryn Ansted a young painter graduating from UWA.  Talented and enthusiastic ......watch this space

2004 will be less frenetic (more time in the Margaret River retreat). In August there's an exhibition in Darwin with a show inspired by Opera Under the Stars,  co-inciding with that event in Broome end of August/September.  Later in the year we are hoping to hold a studio exhibition.  It's been 5 years since the last one and it could work next year!!  We'll be in touch!!   For those of you not residing in the above locations - browser through our website for your nearest gallery who should have a good selection of current works.
